Dentistry: CAD CAM technologies

What is CAD CAM?

CAD/CAM is the automated creation of a project and its implementation using computer technology. CAD technology involves creating a three-dimensional model in all projections based on a scan of the patient's oral cavity. Thanks to the system, it is easy to analyze the patient's clinical case from any angle and make a relevant decision to solve the problem.

CAM is a computer-aided model making. After receiving a 3D model of the product, it is manufactured according to the instructions and a set of project parameters. TDuring the process, mandatory processing takes place: sintering, milling, grinding, burning. This ensures high accuracy, quality, aesthetics, and reliability of the product. By combining automated systems and dental equipment, a dental institution increases customer loyalty.

CAD/CAM technologies

At the beginning of the work, the doctor takes photos of the maxillofacial area in different projections. After that, computed tomography and scanning of the patient's dentition model are performed. The data is processed using special software that models the shape and size of the dentition. The program allows you to assess the condition of soft and bone tissue, localization, and contact density. The specialist designs the appearance of the future smile. CAD/CAM dental modeling technologies have a number of advantages:

  • accuracy due to the consideration of anatomical features;

  • safety and correct placement of implants;

  • high quality of robotic equipment;

  • speed;

  • practicality.

Visualization of the appearance of teeth minimizes aesthetic problems. Thanks to this, the doctor and the patient have the opportunity to see the result, agree on the nuances, and make corrections if necessary.

The main stages of CAD/CAM technology

The workflow includes three main stages. The first one involves fixing or recording the internal state of the oral cavity. During the scan, the specialist must make sure that all angles are captured and visualized. After recording the data on the computer, a program for individual restoration design is used. The preparation process is displayed on the monitor. The CAD system provides a proposal for an idealized restoration, after which the dentist can make adjustments using on-screen tools.

At the second stage, the program determines the morphological characteristics: tubercles, fissures, marginal ridges, and sliding contact angle. The corresponding individual features are entered into the virtual restoration model. By distributing contact points, tubercle tops, and proximal contacts, the system creates a customized tooth, taking into account the contact and bite. During modeling, natural, individualized occlusal surfaces are formed. The manufactured block is transferred to the machine, where it is milled.

At the final stage, the dental milling machine produces the product based on the design in the CAD program. Digital impressions reduce the number of visits to the dentist. The system increases the efficiency of treatment. Patients get maximum comfort in the dentist's chair.

Classification of crowns

Modeling teeth for a crown using CAD/CAM technology allows you to create different types of crowns:

  1. Temporary — used to maintain aesthetics, as a temporary solution during the manufacture of permanent ones.

  2. Permanent single — made to restore a single tooth.

  3. Bridges — designed for one or more missing teeth.

  4. Telescopic —- for clasp dentures.

Stamped metal crowns are now less and less used in dental practice. They are usually installed on the posterior teeth. The stages of manufacturing a stamped crown have a number of disadvantages, which leads to their incomplete fit. Lack of tightness causes tooth decay.
